Anastasia - Musical Information
Terrence McNally wrote the book for Anastasia, while Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens composed the music and lyrics. The musical is based on the animated film Anastasia (1920) by 20th Century Fox and tells the story of the Grand Duchess Anastasia Nikolaevna of Russia, who was said to have fled from the execution of the Russian family imperial.
Years later, Anya, a young lady with amnesia, teams up with two scam artists looking to use her similarity to Anastasia to uncover her history. Numerous performances of the musical have taken place all around the globe since its 2017 Broadway opening at the Broadhurst Theatre, following a successful pre-Broadway run in Hartford, Connecticut.
On May 13, 2016, previews for the original stage production of Anastasia began at the Hartford Stage in Hartford, Connecticut. Darko Tresnjak directed the production, Peggy Hickey choreographed it, and Christy Altomare and Derek Klena starred as Anya and Dmitry, respectively. Rasputin and his musical number "In the Dark of the Night" are also missing from the musical and other supernatural aspects of the original film.
