Aida Information
Giuseppe Verdi's tragic four-act opera Aida was set to music by Antonio Ghislanzoni and has an Italian libretto. It premiered on 24 December 1871 at Cairo's Khedivial Opera House, conducted by Giovanni Bottesini, and was commissioned by the opera house. The opera was set in the Old Kingdom of Egypt. There are still yearly performances of the opera all over the globe; since its premiere in 1886, Aida has been performed more than 1,100 times at the Metropolitan Opera in New York.
The opera My Darlin' Aida, which premiered on Broadway in 1952, was adapted from Verdi's opera and takes place on a Tennessee plantation during the American Civil War's early years. Among the several cinematic adaptations of the opera are a 1953 version starring Lois Maxwell as Amneris and Sophia Loren as Aida, as well as a Swedish production from 1987.
Elton John and Tim Rice wrote a musical based on the opera in 1998, using just the plot and lyrics as inspiration. The 2001 Italian animated film Aida degli alberi (The Help of the Trees) depicts the opera. As the betrayed lovers struggle to overcome the wicked high priest Ramfis and discover a means to unite both realms, the protagonists are viewed as anthropomorphic beings spanning the mythical kingdoms of Petra and Alborea.
