US Open Cup Information
The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, sometimes known as the US Open Cup or USOC, is a national knockout soccer event organized by the United States Soccer Federation, or USSF. Major League Soccer, the USL League One and Championship League, the National Independent Soccer Association, amateur teams from USL League Two, the National Premier Soccer League, the United States Adult Soccer Association, and U.S. Club Soccer set the four professional leagues sanctioned by the USSF against one another.
Known as the Challenge Cup, the competition began in the 1913–14 season. The first event was won by Brooklyn Field Club, which received a trophy from Thomas Dewar to further soccer in the U.S. In 1999, it was changed to the Lamar Hunt Cup. After beating Inter Miami CF in the 2023 final, Houston Dynamo FC—the most recent competition champions—won their second trophy. MLS clubs competed in every Open Cup event from 1996 until 2023.
On December 15, 2023, MLS stated that connected reserve clubs from MLS Next Pro will replace MLS teams for the 2024 edition. Later, U.S. Soccer turned down the proposal, deciding that MLS clubs must participate in the U.S. Open Cup's 2024 edition.
