Owen Sound Attack Information
When the Holody family relocated the Guelph Platers to Owen Sound for the 1989–90 OHL season, a new Ontario Hockey League team was established. Owen Sound Platers is still the team's official moniker. In the late summer of 2000, a new community-based Ontario Hockey League team was born: the Owen Sound Attack. Once the Holody family decided to sell the Owen Sound Platers, potential bidders came from all across the country.
Several business owners in Owen Sound worried that selling to an outsider might result in the team leaving town. Cornwall, Ontario, was the most often mentioned ex-OHL city. This consortium of local businesses pooled their resources to buy the team. The squad stayed in Owen Sound following a heated bidding war and a summerlong legal battle with another suitor.
The company's proprietors decided to modify the name to the more hip-sounding "Owen Sound Attack." Owen Sound's 2004–05 OHL season was the best for regular season performance ever. Mike Futa, the team's general manager, was named OHL Executive of the Year for his contributions to the organization. In 2005, the club hosted the OHL All-Star Game.
