Maine Mariners Information
The Maine Mariners are a professional ice hockey team in the ECHL. They started playing in the 2018–19 season. The team's home field is Cross Insurance Arena in Portland, Maine. As a member of the Eastern Conference, the squad competes in the North Division. After changing their name to the Springfield Thunderbirds in 2016, the team took over for the Portland Pirates of the American Hockey League.
After being sold on May 23, 2016, the Portland Pirates franchise was moved to Springfield, Massachusetts, and renamed the Springfield Thunderbirds. In 2017, a group of businessmen led by Brad Church (a former Portland player) and W. Godfrey Wood (a former Pirates executive) revealed their plans to establish an ECHL franchise in Portland.
Armstrong was succeeded as head coach by Ben Guite, an assistant coach for the men's hockey team at the University of Maine and a former NHL player. In August 2021, the Philadelphia Flyers recruited Guite to work with the AHL's Lehigh Valley Phantoms.
The Worcester Railers lost overtime to the Trois-Rivières Lions on April 16, 2022, while the Mariners won their first-ever playoff game against the Newfoundland Growlers, securing the fourth and final North Division playoff slot.
The Mariners' first-ever postseason series ended in a 4-2 loss to the Reading Royals. In the 2022–23 ECHL season, the Maine Mariners again secured a playoff position, earning the third seed in their division. In their first-round matchup, they lost a four-game series to the Reading Royals.
