The Clovis Women's Club hosted the inaugural Clovis Festival in the spring of 1914. It is now in its 109th year, and among the initial leaders who began it were Mrs. Carl Merriman, Mrs. Brook Gross, and Mrs. M.S. McMurtry. A barren lot in the northwest corner of what was once the town of Clovis was the site of the first festival. A small number of cars and several wagons and carriages constituted the arena circle.

Businesses and cattlemen in Clovis formally joined the "Horse Show Association" in 1936. At the end of the timber flume that had once transported lumber from the mountains, the association bought the property in 1937 owned by the Shaver Lake Timber Company. The event evolved into the Clovis Rodeo that is known today after wooden grandstands were set there. In 1949, construction began on the main concrete grandstand.

Everyone still gathers for the Clovis Rodeo on the final full weekend of April, just like they did when it first started, to have a good time, make new friends, and unwind. The Clovis Rodeo would like to extend its gratitude to the community of volunteers who have made it a success year after year. They hope that the Clovis rodeo and Western culture festivals will continue to be a success.
