Belleville Senators Information
Despite having three more years left on their lease, the Ottawa Senators announced in July 2016 that they planned to move their franchise, then known as the Binghamton Senators, closer to the parent club beginning in the 2017-18 season. Ottawa Senators owner Eugene Melnyk revealed on September 26, 2016, that he had purchased the Binghamton team and would be transferring it to Belleville as the Senators for the 2017-18 season, with the Binghamton Devils later announcing that they would be taking over the lease.
Belleville approved more than $20 million in Yardmen Arena upgrades after the Senators signed an eight-year lease to make room for an American Hockey League franchise. Kurt Kleinendorst was the Senators' head coach during the team's first season in Belleville, but his contract was not renewed after the team finished with a 29-42-2-3 record and missed the playoffs. Former Hershey Bears head coach Troy Mann took over for him. Younger players like Drake Batherson, Logan Brown, Rudolfs Balcers, and Erik Brannstrom helped the squad progress in the 2018-2019 season, allowing them to finish sixth in the North Division.
