Yuja Wang Information
Yuja Wang (February 10, 1987) is a Chinese pianist born in Beijing, China. At six, Wang began taking piano lessons. She enrolled in the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing when she was seven. Wang was the youngest student to enroll at Mount Royal University's Morningside Music Bridge International Music Festival in Calgary, Alberta when he was eleven years old. Wang enrolled in Philadelphia's Curtis Institute of Music when she was fifteen years old and studied under Gary Graffman for five years, graduating in 2008.
In a world premiere at Carnegie Hall in 2017, Wang was a member of the National Youth Orchestra of China. Under the baton of Seattle Symphony director Ludovic Morlot, they played Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1 in B-Flat Minor. As a 2019 tribute to Michael Tilson Thomas, an honoree of the Kennedy Center, Wang performed "You Come Here Often?" According to conductor Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Wang's performance on January 28, 2023, in Carnegie Hall with the Philadelphia Orchestra of all four Rachmaninoff piano concertos as well as his Rhapsody on a Theme by Paganini was like climbing Mount Everest.
The performance had to be halted midway through the second movement of the piano concerto number 2 because an audience member passed out. They had to be taken to the hospital. Twenty minutes afterward, the process was restarted. As an encore, Wang performed "Dance of the Blessed Spirits" from Christoph Willibald Gluck's Orfeo ed Euridice following the completion of the last concerto.
