Yonder Mountain String Band Information
The Yonder Mountain String Band is a bluegrass band from Nederland, Colorado. The band comprises Adam Aijala, Nick Piccininni, Dave Johnston, Ben Kaufmann, and Coleman Smith. They have put out several live recordings in addition to five studio albums. Dave Johnston, a banjo player, asked Jeff Austin to sing with his band, The Bluegrassholes, after they met in Urbana, Illinois, who was not much of a musician.
The band was a mainstay at NedFest, a music festival in their hometown, from 1999 to 2001. By 2000, larger venues, such as San Francisco's The Fillmore, began to feature the band's performances. This Bird Has Flown: A 40th Anniversary Tribute to the Beatles' Rubber Soul included their 2005 "Think for Yourself" rendition for your listening pleasure.
In May 2015, Allie Kral, who plays violin, and Jake Jolliff, who plays mandolin, officially joined Yonder Mountain String Band after performing with the group since Austin's departure. Former member of the madgrass band Floodwood and multi-instrumentalist/mandolinist Nick Piccininni joined in 2020. Their 2022 album, Get Yourself Outside, was nominated for Best Bluegrass Album at the 2023 Grammys.
