Yellowjackets Information
Yellowjackets is an American jazz fusion band. The group's current lineup consists of Dabe Alderson, Will Kennedy, Bob Mintzer, and Russell Ferrante. Among the musicians Robben Ford enlisted for his 1977 debut as a solo artist were Russell Ferrante, Jimmy Haslip, and Ricky Lawson. They agreed to keep working together, and producer Tommy LiPuma signed them to Warner Bros. Records under the moniker Yellowjackets from a list of suggestions the band had made.
The band had a Grammy Award nomination for Best Fusion Performance with their 1984 album Mirage a Trois. Ford left the band after recording only half of this album, and saxophone Marc Russo was brought in to fill in. The single "And You Know That" won the Grammy for Best R&B Instrumental Performance, and the following album, Shades, peaked at No. 4 on Billboard's jazz album chart.
Timeline for Mack Avenue was released in 2011 by the Yellowjackets in honor of their 30th anniversary as a band. Haslip was succeeded by Felix Pastorius when he went on an extended leave (son of bassist Jaco Pastorius.) With Pastorius, the band published their album A Rise in the Road. Pastorius used his father's signature fretless bass guitar sound on a few tracks.
