They are an Israeli band with members with ancestry from various countries and cultures: Greece, Turkey, Iraq, Morocco, Hungary, Latvia, Bukharia, and Brooklyn. After forming in 2010, the Yamma Ensemble quickly became known as one of the most esteemed and knowledgeable groups playing this style in Israel.
The unusual and esoteric collision of diaspora melodies and dialects—a sensation that is both old and immensely modern—is the pan-global product of this rich and expressly Jewish collaboration. The duduk, ney, kopuz, oud, and shofar are some of the instruments that the musicians use, all of which have biblical or other ancient textual references.
They exchange rebetiko from Thessaloniki, love poems in Ladino from Turkey, and Old Testament prayers from the Psalms, as the ancient Jews of Babylon may have heard them. An uplifting, mesmerizing melody that transcends borders and traces thousands of years of migration and links between people in the Middle East, the Balkans, and Europe is about to enchant you.
