Kathy Yaeji Lee (August 6, 1993) is professionally known as Yaeji. She is a Korean-American electronic music artist (DJ, singer, and music producer). Yaeji is based in Brooklyn, New York, and was born in Flushing, Queens. Her music style is defined as a blend of elements of house music and hip hop as well as mellow, quiet vocals that are sung in both Korean and English. During her time in South Korea, Yaeji switched between different international schools every year. This made her discover better music. After moving back to the U.S., she studied conceptual art, graphic design, and East Asian studies at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh.
Yaeji used to embrace DJing as a hobby but later began to DJ at house parties. She worked as a DJ for nearly two years and later learned Ableton, making her music. She debuted on Carnegie Mellon's college radio station and graduated in 2015 from the same college. Yaeji moved back to New York City after her graduation and began her official career.
"New York '93" was the first single by Yaeji that referred to her year of birth. The song was issued on February 29, 2016, on the New York City label Godmode. This single was followed by the cover of "Guap" by Australian DJ Mall Grab. Later on March 31, 2017, Yaeji released her debut eponymous EP, including both prior singles.
