Willie Colon Information
William Anthony Colón Román (April 28, 1950) is an American social activist and salsa musician. He was born in the South Bronx in New York City. He began playing the trumpet at an early age, but after hearing the all-trombone sounds of Mon Rivera and Barry Rogers, he decided to convert to the trombone. A Fania Records contract was secured while he was just 15 years old, and his first album sold more than 300,000 copies. Héctor Lavoe was recommended to Johnny Pacheco, Fania's top producer.
He collaborated with many other salsa artists throughout his career, including Ismael Miranda, Celia Cruz, Soledad Bravo, Rubén Blades, and others. Colón promoted his album El Malo Vol II: Prisioneros del Mambo with the release of two singles: "Amor de Internet" and "Corazón Partido." Colón's 50th Anniversary Tour began in 2016. Earlier this year, Colón announced the publication of Barrio de Guapos (The Secret Life of Willie Colon) and the founding of his record label, Willie Colon Presents. He was the first person of color to serve on the ASCAP national board, taking Stephen Sondheim's place in 1995, and he was also a member of the ASCAP Foundation at the time.
