Viva El Paso Information
Viva! El Paso is an American musical that is performed every year, celebrating El Paso’s cultural history through songs, narration, drama, and dance. The musical has been running continuously since 1978. The musical was updated with a piece of new music and script in 2016. Viva! El Paso is usually performed outdoors in a notable amphitheater, McKelligon Canyon.
The performance of the Viva! El Paso describes the over 400 years old history of El Paso. There is a total of two versions of the musical play. The play was created by Hector Serrano and was first performed in 1978. The play was produced by the Los Pobres Bilingual Theatre Repertory Company. The play went on hiatus in 2014 due to a lack of funding to support Viva!.
The new production of Viva! started in 2016 with a brand new script written by Marty Martin. The new version was produced through collaboration with the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP), the El Paso Community College (EPCC), the El Paso Community Foundation, and El Paso Live. The new version of Viva! included additional dance and music scenes as well as streamlined the original script. Cody Ritchey and Jim Ward did the musical arrangement of the updated version.
