Vicente Fernandez Gomez (February 17, 1940) is a Mexican actor, singer, and film producer. He is also known by his nickname “Chente.” He began his career as a busker and then became a cultural icon. So far, he has recorded more than 50 albums and contributed to over 30 films in his career. Fernandez’s repertoire consisted of many other Mexican classics as well as rancheras.
Fernandez did amazing in his career, earning him three Grammy Awards, fourteen Lo Nuestro Awards, nine Latin Grammy Awards, and one time starring on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Fernandez sold more than 50 million copies globally throughout his career, making him one of the best-selling regional Mexican artists of all time. He retired from performing live in 2016 but continued recording and publishing his work.
Fernandez launched his first-ever tour outside the United States and Mexico in 1987. This was when he traveled to Colombia and Bolivia. In 1971, he appeared in the movies for the first time with Tacos al carbon. In 1976, he starred in the film La ley del monte for the first time. Fernandez fully dedicated himself to acting during the initial 20 years of his career. He starred in almost 30 films, and 18 out of those were under the direction of Rafael Villasenor Kuri. Fernandez has shared the stage with many nationally renowned actors, including Lucia Mendez, Resortes, Fernando Soto, Sara Garcia, and Blanca Guerra.
