The Vail Dance Festival has been running annually since 1989, and it has helped make the Vail Valley one of the most sought-after summer dance destinations in the world. The Dance Festival originated from the three sold-out performances by Madame Sophia Golovkina and her students from the Bolshoi Ballet Academy of Moscow at the Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater in the summer of 1989 after their original performances in Houston were canceled.
After seeing the shows and feeling the community's warmth, Golovkina determined that Vail should host the Bolshoi Academy's famed North American satellite school. Longtime Vail Valley residents and former president and first lady Ford saw the potential for cultural exchange through dance that would eventually become the Vail International Dance Festival, renowned worldwide for the caliber of its artists and the originality of the performances they present each year.
In 1992, the concerts were expanded into a three-week residency for the Bolshoi Academy of Moscow, culminating in four shows at the Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater. A national audience began tuning in, and as the festival evolved, it added educational workshops and performances in a wider range of styles, eventually becoming known as the Vail International Dance Festival.
