Utah Blues Festival Information
Utah has a rich tradition of producing world-class blues musicians. Blues legends like BB King, Muddy Waters, James Cotton, and many more first appeared at the Park West Blues Festivals in the early 1980s and later at the Snowbird Jazz & Blues Festivals, which ran from 1987 to 2009. Numerous blues greats appeared, including Son Seals, Koko Taylor, Buddy Guy, Keb Mo, Johnny Winter, Little Milton, Jimmie Vaughan, Elvin Bishop, and Matt "Guitar" Murphy. The Zephyr Club and the Dead Goat Saloon were legendary nightlife destinations that contemporary blues bands still talk about fondly when playing in cities nationwide. (Interestingly enough, they both went out of business in the summer of 2003.)
Blues lovers had yet to attend an event where they could see regional and national headliners on the same lineup once Snowbird stopped receiving corporate funding. Local musicians and blues fans established the Rhythm & Blues Rendezvous in 2009 in Rockport State Park to fill this need. The Rendezvous featured the best local blues scene and raised money for deserving causes.
The Utah Blues Society, having become a tax-exempt organization in 2014, set about organizing a festival featuring regional and national blues acts. A first-ever Utah Blues Festival occurred at the Utah Cultural Celebration Center on June 13, 2015. Even though other festivals have been held in Utah before, this was the first Utah Blues Festival organized by UBS.
