Tinariwen Information
Tinariwen may be unique among worldwide musical groups in that the late Colonel Gaddafi allegedly trained its original members to fight in the desert. 'Desert Boys' is a loose translation of the band's name; it fits the nomadic Tuareg musicians' lifestyle, taking them across Libya, Algeria, and Mali.
Ibrahim Ag Alhabib, a Mali-born Tuareg who sadly saw his father die in a rebel rebellion in 1963, started the band. Ag Alhabib started a band with pals in the rebel Tuareg community in the late 1970s. The Desert Boys signed up when Libya's government asked any Tuareg rebels residing illegally in Libya to join their army and get legal permission to remain in the nation.
The band has had a vibrant past, from musicians and rebel fighters to performers. By the end of the millennium, their French manager, Philippe Brix, had helped them to establish themselves on the international music scene. Unfortunately, Islamic radicals have targeted the band in recent years; several members have been compelled to flee persecution in the U.S.
