Tim Berne Information
Tim Berne (October 16, 1954) is an American avant-garde jazz record label owner and saxophonist. He was born in Syracuse, New York. Until he enrolled at Lewis & Clark College in Oregon, he had no desire to learn an instrument, he has said. His interest in jazz was piqued after hearing Dogon A.D. (1972), an album by Julius Hemphill. A lover of R&B, he felt that Hemphill's jazz had the emotion of the genre's music. In 1974, he tracked down Hemphill in New York and began taking saxophone lessons and career guidance from him. Back in 1979, Berne laid the groundwork for the record label Empire.
He worked on four albums for Empire alongside avant-garde jazz greats like John Carter, Alex Cline, Nels Cline, Olu Dara, Vinny Golia, Paul Motian, and Ed Schuller. In the early '80s, Soul Note released his next two albums. He collaborated with trumpeter Herb Robertson throughout these sessions. He then signed a recording contract with Columbia and collaborated on albums with Robbie Robertson, Hank Roberts, and Bill Frisell. His second CD got him signed to JMT, an avant-garde jazz record company. He fronted a trio consisting of Formanek and Black and a quartet with Speed and Black. Following its acquisition by PolyGram, JMT ceased operations.
