Tigran Hamasyan is a jazz pianist who was born in Gyumri, Armenia. Hamasyan dreamed of being a thrash metal guitarist during his childhood. He began studying jazz at nine, and once he gathered enough knowledge, Hamasyan began to incorporate local folk melodies into jazz-form improvisations. As a teenager, Hamasyan was influenced by Armenian composers such as Avet Terterian and Arno Babjanian. At 16, he moved to California.
Tigran Hamasyan recorded his debut album entitled “World Passion” when he was 18. He spent 2013 almost entirely in Armenia; during this period, Hamasyan developed an interest in Armenian folk music. He has been a leader of the “Aratta Rebirth,” with which he performed Red Hail. As a lead artist, Tigran Hamasyan has been featured in many notable albums throughout his career. These include A Fable (2011), Shadow Theater (2013), Mockroof (2015), Luys I Luso (2015), An Ancient Observer (2017), They Say Nothing Stays The Same (2019), and The Call Within (2020).
Some of the notable EPs in which Hamasyan has been featured are EP No. 1 (2011), The Poet (2014), and For Gyumri (2018). Several hit collaborations were made by Hamasyan throughout his musical career such as Abu Nawas Rhapsody with Dhafer Youssef (2010), Lines Of Oppression with Ari Hoenig (2011), Libretto with Lars Danielsson (2012), Lobi with Stephane Galland (2012), Jazz-Iz-Christ with Serj Tankian, Tom Duprey & Valeri Tolstov (2013), The World Begins Today with Jeff Ballard/Sam Mianie/Olivier Boge (2013), and Libretto II with Lars Danielsson (2014).
