Big 12 Mens Basketball Tournament Information

The Big 12 men's basketball tournament has been held annually since 1997 under sponsorship agreements as the Phillips 66 Big 12 men's basketball tournament. It is the conference championship tournament for men's basketball.

The event consists of 4 rounds of single-elimination play, with the top 6 seeds receiving byes in the first round. Seasonal records are used for seeding. The Big 12 Conference sends its champion to the NCAA Tournament without any more voting.

From 2005 to 2019, only Iowa State and Kansas, two of the current Big 12 members, managed to win the tournament 17 out of 25 times. There are just six more tournament championships won by the other current Big 12 institutions. During its initial 23 years, a school won the tournament from the original Big Eight Conference alone.

After the 2021 national championship game victory over Oklahoma State by the Texas Longhorns, the run ended.

The announcements that the Big 12 Tournament will remain in Kansas City through 2024 and 2025 were made on October 24, 2018, and June 12, 2020, respectively. With 12 victories out of 25 games played and 15 appearances in Big 12 championship games, Kansas now owns the record for most playoff titles won by a Big 12 team.
