Third World Information
Third World is a Jamaican Reggae fusion band. It was formed in 1973. The current lineup of the group consists of AJ Brown, Norris "Noreiga" Webb, Maurice Gregory, Tony "Ruption" Williams, Richard Daley, and Stephen "Cat" Coore. The band's music incorporates multiple genres such as disco, funk, and soul. Over the years, Third World has gone through several lineup changes, but Daley and Coore have been the constant members since the band's formation.
Third World recorded some tracks with Geoffrey Chung that were not released for some reasons, but they self-produced the single entitled "Railroad Track" in 1974. Soon, the band signed a record deal with Island Records and embarked on the European tour along with The Wailers. In 1976, Third World came up with their self-titled debut album. The album consisted of a cover of "Satta Massagana," originally performed by The Abyssinians. The cover became a local hit for the band.
Third World collaborated with Frederick Hickling, a psychiatrist, in 1977 on the Explanations show that was performed at Kingston's Little Theatre. Third World had accumulated cross-over success on the UK Jazz Funk Scene in 1983 with their reggae single entitled "Lagos Jump." The track also gained popularity on the London club scene and at Flicks in Dartford.
Third World was also awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Jamaica Jazz and Blue Festival in Montego Bay in January 2013, where they celebrated their 40th year of continuous music.
