The Suburbs Information
The Suburbs is an American alternative punk, rock, funk, and new wave band. The current lineup of the group consists of Stephen Kung (horns and keyboards), Rochelle Becker (baritone saxophone), Janey Winterbauer (backing vocals), Steve Price (bass), Jeremy Ylvisaker (guitar), Steve Bransteg (guitar), Max Ray (saxophone), Hugo Klaers (drums and vocals), and Chan Poling (keyboards and vocals). Jay's Longhorn Bar and First Avenue, two of Minneapolis' most renowned music venues, were frequent stops for the band.
The Suburbs were created in the western suburbs of Minneapolis in 1977 after Chris Osgood of the Suicide Commandos introduced them. They released The Suburbs on the Twin/Tone label in early 1978, following live performances. The EP consisted of nine songs on 7-inch red vinyl. The band also had two songs on the compilation Big Hits of Mid-America, Volume Three: "Urban Guerrillas" and "Ailerons O.K." Guitarist Bruce C. Allen did the compilation's art direction.
The band released the 12-inch song "Waiting" in 1982, which was extensively played on dance-club playlists. On Twin/Tone, the EP Dream Hog was released, comprising three new songs and a B-side remix of "Waiting," all produced by Steven Greenberg of Funkytown and Lipps Inc fame.
Si Sauvage, the band's first new album in 27 years, was released on November 19, 2013. Poling, Hugo Klaers, and Blaine John "Beej" Chaney, new musicians Steve Brantseg and Steve Price, special guest vocalists Janey Winterbauer and Aby Wolf make up Si Sauvage.
