The Skatalites Information
The Skatalites are a Jamaican band that was founded in 1964 by Tommy McCook (passed in 1998), Lester Sterling, Lloyd Brevett (passed in 2012), Alphonso (passed in 1998), Lloyd Knibb (passed in 2011), Jackie Mittoo (passed in 1990), Johnny Moore (passed in 2008) Don Drummond (passed in 1969), Jah Jerry Haynes (passed in 2007), and Jackie Opel (passed in 1970). The 10 of them began playing together in 1955. The music of the band is defined as ska, rocksteady, reggae, and ska jazz. The current lineup of The Skatalites consists of Doreen Shaffer – vocals; Azemobo "Zem" Audu – tenor saxophone; Andre Murchison – trombone; Val Douglas – bass guitar; Travis Antoine – trumpet; Natty Frenchy – guitar; Ken Stewart – keyboards; and Trevor "Sparrow" Thompson – drums.
The Skatalites have worked with several different record labels to date, including Studio One, Treasure Isle, King Edwards, Randy's, Top Deck Records, Shanachie Records, and Island Records. The band recorded its first LP entitled Ska Authentic at Studio One in the spring of 1964. The group played its first show on June 27, at the Hi-Hat Club, on Water Lane in Rae Town. The last appearance by the Skatalites was played in August 1965 before the band broke up into two supergroups.
The first reunion of the group happened during a 1974 session for bass player Lloyd Brevett's solo album. The follow-up albums were Return of the Big Guns (Island, 1984), Greetings from Skamania (Shanachie, 1996), Ball of Fire (Island, 1998), On the Right Track (AIM, 2007), Platinum Ska (Island Empire, 2016), and many more. The band also released many Live and Collaboration albums such as Live at Sunsplash (1984), Live at Lokerse Feesten 1997 & 2002, and With Sly & Robbie & Taxi Gang (Vista, 1984).
