The Music Man Information
The Music Man is a musical that is based on a story by Willson and Franklin Lacey and features a book, music, and lyrics by Meredith Willson. The story revolves around con artist Harold Hill, who promises to instruct the new band members while posing as a boys' band organizer and leader and markets band instruments and uniforms to gullible Midwestern residents. Harold intends to flee town without delivering any music lessons; he is not a musician.
Comprising five Tony Awards, including Best Musical, and running for 1,375 shows, the production became a smash on Broadway in 1957. Spending 245 weeks on the Billboard charts, the cast recording claimed the inaugural Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater recording. The production's success resulted in Broadway and West End revivals, a famous 1962 film version, and a 2003 television adaptation.
Beginning previews on December 20, 2021, a Broadway revival launched at the Winter Garden Theatre on February 10, 2022. Santo Loquasto designed sets and costumes; Brian MacDevitt provided lighting; Scott Lehrer handled sound. 2020 was the scheduled opening year for manufacturing. September 23, 2022, brought the official cast recording release.
