The Minus 5 Information
The Minus 5 is an American pop-rock band led by Scott McCaughey of Young Fresh Fellows. They often work with Peter Buck, the drummer for R.E.M. McCaughey created the band in 1993 as a side project with Buck, Jon Auer, and Ken Stringfellow of The Posies.
Although Buck relocated to the Seattle region in 1992, the other members of the band were all long-time regulars at the city's popular music venues. The Posies and McCaughey's band, The Young Fresh Fellows, are very connected musically and personally. They both recorded at Conrad Uno's Egg Studios and had records published on PopLlama Records, respectively.
John Wesley Harding's 2009 albums Who Was Changed and Who Was Dead and Killingsworth featured on the album. The Minus 5 also released their album that same year. On a 2012 benefit CD called "Super Hits Of The Seventies" for WFMU radio station, they covered the song "Arms of Mary" by Quiver and the Sutherland Brothers, which had been a success in 1976. In 2013, the band performed at SXSW.
The Minus 5 took a brief tour with Alejandro Escovedo in January 2017. John Moen, Scott McCaughey, Kurt Bloch, and Peter Buck performed as the Minus Five for one set at each performance. Then he backed Escovedo for another, occasionally with Kelly Hogan as well. Along with Buck, Escovedo and McCaughey co-wrote the songs for Escovedo's 2016 album Burn Something Beautiful, which included all three performing.
