The Milk Carton Kids are an American indie-folk duo that originated from Los Angeles, California, playing folk and Americana music. The Milk Carton Kids consists of singers and guitarists Joey Ryan and Kenneth Pattengale. The two began making music in 2011 when Ryan attended a solo performance by Pattengale.
The Milk Carton Kids released Retrospect, a live album in March 2011. The duo then performed at SXSW in March 2011, after which they joined Joe Purdy’s North American tour to work as the backing band and opening act. Prologue was the first studio album by the group, which was released on July 19, 2011. The album was referred to as “bittersweet and beautiful” by the San Francisco Chronicle.
“There By Your Side” was a hit song by The Milk Carton Kids named National Public Radio’s Song of the Day. The group headlined a North American tour after the release of Prologue. Some of the other studio albums by the Milk Carton Kids are The Ash & Clay (2013), NPR’s Live From Lincoln Theatre (2014), Monterey (2015), All the Things That I Did And All the Things That I Didn’t Do (2018), and The Only Ones (2019).
The Milk Carton Kids received a Grammy Award nomination for the category of the Best Folk Album of 2013 for The Ash & Clay. The duo was also selected as the Americana Music Association Duo/Group of the Year.
