The Light in the Piazza Information
Craig Lucas wrote the text for The Light in the Piazza, while Adam Guettel wrote the music and lyrics. The plot is set in the 1950s revolving around Margaret Johnson, a wealthy Southern woman, and Clara, her daughter, developmentally challenged due to a childhood accident. It is based on the 1960 novella by Elizabeth Spencer. Summer is spent in Italy by the two of them. Margaret is forced to rethink Clara's future and her deep-seated ambitions and regrets when Clara falls in love with a young Italian man.
With unexpected harmonic shifts and lengthy melodic structures, the score departs from the 21st-century Broadway heritage of pop music by venturing into the domain of Neoromantic classical music and opera. It is more elaborately orchestrated than typical Broadway soundtracks. Because many of the characters are only fluent in Italian, many of the lyrics are in Italian or bad English.
The Light in the Piazza was first staged as a musical at Seattle's Intiman Playhouse in June 2003 and again at Chicago's Goodman Theatre in early 2004. The Broadway play began on April 18, 2005, at the Vivian Beaumont Theater in Lincoln Center, after 36 previews, and ended on July 2, 2006, after 504 performances. Bartlett Sher directed the musical, choreographed by Jonathan Butterell and included Christopher Akerlind's lighting, Michael Yeargan's set, and Catherine Zuber's costumes.
