The American pop band The Lettermen was established in the late 1950s. With five Grammy nominations, eleven gold records, sixteen top singles on the Adult Contemporary charts, and thirty-two consecutive albums on the Billboard charts, the band has attained unrivaled success since its founding. The Lettermen shot to become famous very quickly.
To sell-out audiences in 1958, The Lettermen staged performances at the Las Vegas Desert Inn alongside well-known performers Harry Richman, Fifi D'Orsay, Buster Keaton, and Paul Whiteman. After publishing their popular song, "The Way You Look Tonight," the Lettermen's major break came in 1961. On the Billboard Hot 100 pop chart, the single topped at No. 13.
The song was a nominee for a Grammy Award in 1962 for Best Performance by a Vocal Group. Furthermore, The Lettermen was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best New Artist the same year. Along with well-known performers Jackie Gleason, Anita Bryant, and Kate Smith, The Lettermen staged a concert against indecency in 1969, and President Nixon approved the program. The Lettermen Society Convention in 2012 and 2013 included performances by the group.
