The Klezmatics Information
The Klezmatics is a klezmer music group based in New York City. The current lineup of the band consists of David Licht (drums), Richie Barshay (drums), Lisa Gutkin (violin and vocals), Lorin Sklamberg (vocals, accordion, and piano), Paul Morrissett (bass), Frank London (trumpet and keyboards), and Matt Darriau (alto saxophone, kaval, and clarinet). The group was formed in 1986 and has appeared several times on television, including the PBS Great Performance series and Itzhak Perlman.
The Klezmatics has participated in cross-cultural collaborations with Moroccan musicians such as the Master Musicians of Jajouka, American singer Arlo Guthrie, Israeli Singers Ehud Banay and Chava Alberstein, the Romani virtuoso Ferus Mustafov. In addition, the group worked with poet Allen Ginsberg in Berlin. The band organized their 20th-anniversary concert at New York City’s Town Hall on March 5, 2006. The event was also featured in the documentary chronicling the history and the band’s significance entitled “The Klezmatics: On Holy Ground” (2010).
The Klezmatics has recorded for the now-defunct Jewish Music Groups named Flying Fish, Xenophile, Piranha, and Rounder. In 2006, the band released “Wonder Wheel,” which won the Grammy for the group in “Best Contemporary World Music Album.”
The Klezmatics has released several notable albums to date, including Apikorsim (2016), Live at Town Hall (2011), Tuml = Lebn: The Best of the First 20 Years (2008), Woody Guthrie’s Happy Joyous Hanukkah (2006), Wonder Wheel (2006), Brother Moses Smote the Water (2004), Rise Up! Shteyt Oyf! (2002), and Possessed (1997).
