The Four Freshmen Information
The Four Freshmen is an American male vocal quartet. The group's current lineup consists of Bob Ferreira, Jake Baldwin, Ryan Howe, and Tommy Boynton. The band formed in Indiana in 1948 and saw its heyday in the middle of the 1950s. Although the final founding member resigned in 1993, the band still performs worldwide. It has been recording jazz duets since its inception in the late 1940s at Butler University's Jordan School of Music in Indianapolis.
Dizzy Gillespie and Woody Herman were just two jazz greats who praised the Four Freshmen. For the first time, Stan Kenton heard the quintet on March 21, 1950, at the Esquire Lounge in Dayton, Ohio. After hearing about them at his performance earlier that night, he set up an audition with his label, Capitol Records, and signed them later that year (he "had been told at his show earlier that night about a quartet in town that sounded like his 43-piece ensemble"). Three other tracks joined "Laura" and "Basin' Street Blues" on the demo.
They sang "How D'Ya Like Your Eggs in the Morning" with Jane Powell and Vic Damone in their lone film appearance, Rich, Young, and Pretty, and released their first record, "Mr. B's Blues," that same year. A second song by the Freshmen, 1951's "Now You Know," also failed to chart. As the year progressed, Capitol turned down their next single, "It's a Blue World," and eventually dropped them.
