The English Beat Information
The Beat is known as the English Beat in the United States and Canada, while in Australia, it is known as the British Beat. The group was initially founded in Birmingham, England, in 1978. The music of the English Beat is defined as the fusion of Latin, ska, pop, soul, reggae, and punk rock. The current lineup of the band includes Ranking Roger (vocals), Andy Cox (guitar), Dave Wakeling (vocals, guitar), Everett Morton (drums), David Steele (bass), and Saxa a.k.a. Lionel Augustus Martin (saxophone).
"Tears of a Clown" was the first single by The English Beat, which was a cover version of the Motown hit by Smokey Robinson and the Miracles. The first album by the band was I Just Can't Stop It, released in 1980. A few of the hit singles included in this album are "Mirror In the Bathroom," "Hands Off She's Mine," "Can't Get Used to Losing You," and "Best Friend." Wha'ppen? was the second album by the English Beat that came out in 1981. The album included more hit singles such as "Doors of Your Heart," "All Out to Get You," and "Drowning."
Some of the other notable albums by the English Beat are Special Beat Service 1982, and compilation albums; What Is Beat? 1983, The Beat Goes On 1991, B.P.M.: The Very Best of the Beat 1996, Beat This! The Best of the Beat 2000, The Platinum Collection 2006, You Just Can't Beat It: The Best of the Beat, and Keep The Beat: The Very Best of The English Beat.
The Beat broke up in 1983 but later regrouped as the International Beat. The band has three versions based on lineups to date; The Beat (U.K.) / the English Beat (U.S.), The English Beat starring Dave Wakeling, and The Beat feat. Ranking Roger / the New English Beat feat. Ranking Roger.
