The Decemberists, a Portland, Oregon-based American alternative rock band, were established in 2000. Leading vocals, guitarist, and major songwriter Colin Meloy is joined by guitarist and multi-instrumentalist Chris Funk, accordionist, keyboardist Jenny Conlee, bassist Nate Query, and drummer John Moen.
The band's eight studio albums showcase their penchant for lyrically exploring folklore and historical events. During their live performances, audience engagement is encouraged, especially during encores. Members of the audience participate in the band's zany reenactments of sea disputes and other events from bygone eras, usually those that are relevant to the area, or they join in on the singing.
"Down by the Water" was nominated for Best Rock Song at the 54th Grammy Awards in 2011 from the album The King Is Dead. The band's latest album, I'll Be Your Girl, was announced on January 17, 2018, and released on March 16, 2018. There was a tour in support of the record, which John Congleton produced.
Listeners could watch the band perform live on August 14 on WFUV as part of the BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn Festival at Prospect Park Bandshell. In April 2021, the band commemorated their twentieth anniversary by streaming a few of their shows. The name of their August 2022 North American tour was Arise From The Bunkers.
