The Cult Information
The Cult is a British rock band that was formed in 1983. The band’s originated from Bradford, Yorkshire. It was formed as Southern Death Cult by the songwriter and vocalist Ian Astbury. He was later on joined by Aki Nawaz Qureshi (drums), Buzz Burrows (guitar), and Barry Jepson (bass). The first show that the band performed was in their hometown at Queen’s Hall on October 29, 1981.
The Southern Death Cult released a three-track, triple A-side single, “Moya,” after signing to an independent record label known as Situation Two. They were an offshoot of Beggars Banquet Records. They have toured with Bauhaus and Theatre of Hate as well as headlined some shows during their England tour. In February 1983, the band played its final performance in Manchester. The band only survived for sixteen months then.
Astbury formed another band, “Death Cult,” with guitarist Billy Duffy. Later on, they added Jamie Stewart (bass), and Raymond Taylor Smith (drums) to the band. Both were from Harrow, London, and the post-punk band named “Ritual.” On July 25, 1983, the band performed live in Oslo, Norway. The band released the Death Cult EP in July the same year. Before appearing on the UK Channel 4 television show, The Tube, the band changed its name to “The Cult” in January 1984.
The Cult recorded its debut studio album “Dreamtime” in Monmouth, Wales at Rockfield Studio, which was released on September 10, 1984. Other popular studio albums released by The Cult since then include Love (1985), Electric (1987), Sonic Temple (1989), Ceremony (1991), The Cult (1994), Beyond Good and Evil (2001), Born into This (2007), Choice of Weapon (2012), and a few others.
