The Crayons Information
The Crayons are a classic rock band from Kansas City that was founded back in 1982. The band was created by grade school best friends Larry Kips and Gary Butler. The band's current lineup includes Gary Charlson: Guitar/Vocals, Steve Davis: Lead Guitar/Vocals, Larry Kips: Bass Guitar/Vocals, and Gary Butler: Drums/Vocals. The Crayons thought it would be fun to revisit the music they all grew up with from the 60s music.
The Crayons would get together once a week in Butler’s closet-size storage room to rehearse and rediscover their favorite classic songs. After months of practicing, they were told by some of their friends to start playing in public so others could enjoy their music. As such, the members approached The Harris House owner, which was a restaurant/club in the Westport district of Kansas City.
The group members were famous for providing paper and crayons for those to draw on when they were not on the floor, singing, and dancing. These drawings were then taped on their microphone stands for everyone to see.
The Crayons grew to perform at other venues like Blayney’s of Westport, Backstage, The Hurricane, Center Stage, The Walrus Inn, and Beamers. Before temporarily disbanding, the group's last show was in 1998, in front of a record crowd, and the members formed the tribute band Liverpool; A Tribute to The Beatles. Later in 2013, The Crayons reunited.
