The Chieftains Information
The Chieftains are an Irish band that was formed in 1962 in Dublin. The current lineup of the band consists of Paddy Moloney, Matt Molloy, and Kevin Conneff. The band’s sound is mostly built around uilleann pipes, allowing their music to be synonymous with traditional Irish music.
During 1973, the popularity of The Chieftains began to spread and reached the United States. The band received further acclaim after working on the Academy Award-winning soundtrack recorded for the 1975 film of Stanley Kubrick entitled “Barry Lyndon.” This skyrocketed the band’s transition to the mainstream in the United States.
Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, The Chieftains were highly successful and released several records. They worked with Van Morrison to create the band’s critically acclaimed album, “Irish Heartbeat.” The band has collaborated with several well-known singers and musicians, including Roger Daltrey, Sinead O’Connor, Madonna, the Rolling Stones, and Luciano Pavarotti.
The Chieftains celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2012 with an album and tour. The album is entitled “Voice of Ages,” and it was produced by T-Bone Burnett, featuring many musicians, including The Chieftains. The Chieftains have collaborated with many artists such as Ry Cooder, Elvis Costello, Van Morrison, Mike Oldfield, Nanci Griffith, Mick Jagger, Kepa Junkera, Sting, The Civil Wars, and countless others.
Some influential albums released by the group are The Chieftains (1964), The Chieftains 2 (1969), The Chieftains 3 (1971), The Year of the French (1982), Concert Orchestra (1983), and Celtic Wedding (1987).
