Thana Alexa Information
Thana Alexa (March 19, 1987) was born as Thana Alexa Pavelic in New York City, New York. She is a Croatian American jazz vocalist, arranger, composer, and producer. Her music is defined as jazz, jazz fusion, contemporary soul, and Ethno jazz. Alexa's interest in music began when she was three and mysteriously disappeared from a birthday party; she was found in the basement playing melodies on a toy piano. Soon Alexa expressed a preference for the violin and started to take lessons. After elementary school, Alexa began singing songs in English and took voice lessons at the Rock Academy in Zagreb.
Musician and club owner Boško Petrovic mentored Alexa. She also began attending regional jazz workshops and performing professionally at Croatian festivals. She studied psychology at Northeastern University before transferring to New York City.
Ode to Heroes was the first album by Alexa that was released by Jazz Village. She was also sighted on guitarist Gene Ess's album Absurdist Theatre and collaborated with vibraphonist Christos Rafalides. In May 2020, Alexa, along with her husband and collaborator, Antonio Sanchez, shared the cover of DownBeat Magazine. She has also appeared in the DownBeat magazine Critics' Poll for Rising Female Vocalist for four consecutive years. Alexa was also a runner-up in 2014 Made in New York Jazz Competition.
Alexa released Ode to Heroes (Jazz Village, 2015) and ONA (Self Release, 2020). As a guest, she appeared with Antonio Sanchez in New Life (CAM Jazz, 2013), The Meridian Suite (CAM Jazz, 2015), and Lines in the Sand (CAM Jazz, 2018).
