TD Toronto Jazz Festival Information
For ten days in the latter half of June and the first few days of July, Toronto hosts a jazz festival known as the Toronto Jazz Festival. In contrast to the Beaches International Jazz Festival, most of the events occur inside and are spread out around the downtown area. The Festival is centered around Nathan Phillips Square, although there are over 40 other venues throughout the city. It is the city's third largest annual music festival, behind NXNE and the Beaches International Jazz Festival, and draws over half a million people yearly.
The Festival features a wide variety of jazz styles (including blues, funk, R&B, hip-hop, Latin, and more) and a smattering of other genres (such as blues, Latin, rock, and fusion). When the federal government banned cigarette advertising, the DuMaurier Jazz Festival had to find a new sponsor. The word "Downtown" is no longer included in the name of the Festival, which TD Bank now sponsors.
The Festival was established in 1987 by its current Artistic Director, Josh Grossman, and its Executive Producer, Patrick Taylor. The Festival's predecessor, however, was founded by Jim Galloway, and the first season featured performances at Roy Thomson Hall, the CN Tower, and the Metro Convention Centre. The year's biggest acts included Miles Davis, Roberta Flack, and Tony Bennett.
