Sun Ra Arkestra Information
Sun Ra Arkestra was born as Herman Poole Blount (May 22, 1914). He was an American jazz composer, piano/synthesizer player, bandleader, and poet. Sun Ra was famous for his experimental music and theatrical performances. His music can be defined as jazz fusion, free jazz, experimental, Avant-garde jazz, space music, and bebop.
Sun Ra got involved in the Chicago jazz scene during the late 1940s. He claimed to be an alien Saturn who is on a mission to spread and preach peace. This helped him develop a mythical persona and ended up making him a pioneer of Afrofuturism. The Arkestra was a musical collective led by Sun Ra from the mid-1950s until his death on May 30, 1993. After his death, the group was led by saxophonist John Gilmore and later alto saxophonist Marshall Allen.
Sun Ra and the Arkestra made their first tour of the US West Coast in late 1968. In 1970, the Arkestra began its international tour and visited Egypt at the invitation of the drummer Salah Ragab. Sun Ra played a major part in the music industry. Some of his notable discographies are The Sun Ra Discography, which is said to be one of the largest discographies in music history. The albums included are Deep Purple (Aka Dreams Come True), Jazz by Sun Ra (Aka Sun Song), Visits Planet Earth, and many more.
The Arkestra have performed at the ZXZW festival, Philadelphia's Institute of Contemporary Art, and even Melbourne International Jazz Festival in Australia and MONA (Museum of Old and New Art) in Tasmania in recent years.
Sun Ra Arkestra was also featured in the film Space Is the Place (1974). Robert Mugge's Sun Ra: A Joyful Noise (1980) also featured him.
