Steve Katz Information
Steven Katz (May 9, 1945) is an American record producer, guitarist, and singer. He was born in Brooklyn, New York City. In the late '50s, he began his career on a TV show called Teenage Barn in Schenectady, New York. He would perform popular songs like "Tammy" and "April Love" to accompany a piano. Katz learned guitar from Dave Van Ronk and Rev. Gary Davis when he was 15. He became close friends with musician Stefan Grossman around this time.
It was in 1972 that Steve first met musician Lou Reed. Katz produced Sally Can't Dance and a live album called Rock 'n' Roll Animal after the commercial failure of Reed's album Berlin. Katz returned to music after acting in several performances at this time, including Night Lights by Elliott Murphy, and joined American Flyer alongside Eric Kaz, Craig Fuller of Pure Prairie League, and Doug Yule of The Velvet Underground. George Martin was responsible for producing their first record.
Katz joined Mercury Records in 1977 as the East Coast Director of A&R, eventually rising to Vice President. At Mercury, he spent significant time in Ireland recording three albums for the Irish band Horslips. The members of Horslips first introduced Katz to Irish traditional music when they were an acoustic band performing songs in Gaelic. In 2015, Lyons Press released Katz's autobiography, Blood, Sweat, and My Rock 'n' Roll Years: Is Steve Katz a Rock Star?
