Stephanie Mills (March 22, 1957) is an American singer and songwriter born in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn. Mills debuted professionally in the Broadway musical Maggie Flynn when she was nine. Mills won Amateur Night at the >Apollo Theater
After Suzanne de Passe recommended Mills to Motown, the record label eventually signed her. "So In Love This Christmas" is a new track by Mills released for download around the end of 2012. Forty years after her original Broadway performance in the show, Mills was chosen to play Aunt Em in the 2015 NBC live musical rendition of The Wiz. For her August 2018 response to musician Sam Smith's Instagram video in which Smith said he disliked Michael Jackson but thought "Human Nature" was a "decent song," Mills became a media darling.
In her Instagram comments, Mills slammed Smith, calling him a "one-hit wonder" and accused him of cultural appropriation; her venomous reaction gained momentum rapidly. Mills and Chaka Khan played hits from their respective discographies at a Verzuz fight in November 2021.
