Squirrel Nut Zippers is an American swing and jazz band. The group’s current lineup consists of Neilson Bernard III, Tamara Nicolai, Henry Westmoreland, Dave Boswell, Eddie King, Leslie P. Martin, Cella Blue, Dr. Sick, and Jimbo Mathus. The band was formed in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, in 1993. The band’s music incorporates different genres such as klezmer, 1930s era swing, gypsy jazz, and Delta blues. SNZ also found commercial during the late 1990s swings revival with their hit single entitled “Hell.”
According to SNZ, the band’s initial influences were Tom Waits, Fats Waller, Raymond Scott, Django Reinhardt, Cab Calloway, and Johnny Ace. The band released its debut album entitled, The Inevitable in 1995. The album received airplay on National Public Radio. Their second album, Hot, was released in 1996 and got platinum-certified. SNZ went on touring in support of the album and rock singer Neil Young.
Other studio albums of the Squirrel Nut Zippers include Perennial Favorites (1998), Christmas Caravan (1998), Bedlam Ballroom (2000), Beasts of Burgundy (2018), and Lost Songs Of Doc Souchon (2020). The band released its only live album in 2009 entitled, Lost at Sea.
EPs for SNQ include Sold Out (1997) and Roasted Right (1997). The band’s music has appeared in several films and televisions shows.
