Soul Fest Information
Dan Russell has been responsible for putting on Soulfest every year since it began in 1998. In its first year, the three-day event was held at Loon Mountain in Lincoln, New Hampshire, but in 2005, it moved to Gunstock Mountain Resort in Gilford, New Hampshire. The D.L. Moody Center in Northfield, Massachusetts, was named the new home of SoulFest at the festival's conclusion in 2022.
As documented in the minutes of a Gunstock Area Commission meeting, the Gunstock administration wanted out of its deal with SoulFest early. The resort's management decided to cancel the event in 2022 because it was no longer financially viable due to the large number of visitors (over 10,000 per day and up to 25,000 per year). The festival's creator Dan Russell, said, "They just didn't want us back."
Despite obtaining event permit approval from the Town of Northfield Selectboard in December 2022, organizers forged ahead with advertising and ticket sales for Northfield SoulFest (proposed August 3-5, 2023). The Moody Center suggested an attendance 8,500 for the first Northfield SoulFest in discussions with the Town of Northfield. People in the area are worried that the Town of Northfield (population 2,866 as of the year 2020), the Moody Center (a former prep school), and the surrounding area don't have the facilities necessary to hold a major regional event.
