Smokey Robinson Information
William "Smokey" Robinson Jr. (February 19, 1940) is a legendary R&B and soul artist who has worked in the music industry in various positions. He created the groundbreaking Motown singing group The Miracles, leading them as its lead singer, primary composer, and producer. He was at its head when the group first formed in 1955 as The Five Chimes. It was when he announced his retirement in 1972, which was to focus on his major position as vice president of Motown Records.
In addition to receiving the 2016 Library of Congress Gershwin Prize, Robinson was elected into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987 for his contributions to rock and roll. Both as a solo artist (1983) and as a member of The Miracles (2009), he was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Midway through August of 2014 saw the debut of Smokey & Friends. The album featured some hit collaborations with artists like Elton John, Linda Ronstadt, and James Taylor. The album peaked at position No. 12 on the Billboard 200.
As part of his Turnaround Arts-designated arts mentor role, Robinson paid an April 2017 visit to Fremont-Lopez Elementary School in Stockton, California. Robinson stated in 2023 that he would release an album for the first time in over a decade in April of the same year. The album Gasms will consist of nine tracks of brand-new music. By January 2023, "If We Don't Have Each Other," the album's lead single, was available for digital download and streaming.
