Sister Nancy Information
Ophlin Russell (January 2, 1962) is a Jamaican dancehall singer and DJ. She is professionally known by her stage name, Sister Nancy. She was born in Kingston, Jamaica. She got into Dancehall while she was a teenager. She was the sole female dancer who showed up. She ran away from home for months at a time since the family norms did not appeal to her. Nancy accompanied DJ Junior Chalice around Jamaica and was given to DJ by him in St. Thomas.
Winston Riley was the first to bring her into the studio in 1980, and his Techniques label released her first single, "Papa Dean." Russell-Myers then performed at Reggae Sunsplash, becoming the first female deejay to do so, as well as the first female Jamaican deejay to tour overseas. One Two, her debut album, was released in 1982. She went on to record "A No Any Man Can Test Sister Nancy," "Bang Belly," and a collaboration with Yellowman, "Jah Mek Us Fe A Purpose," with producer Henry "Junjo" Lawes.
Sister Nancy Meets Fireproof, Russell's second album, was released in 2007 on Special Potato Records and was produced by djMush1, previously of the Slackers (NYC Ska). Jammyland Records in New York, NY, distributed the record. Four original compositions are included on the album and four instrumental versions of the songs mentioned above.
