Shakti Information
Shakti is a fusion band created in 1973 as "Turiyananda Sangit." It was founded by the English guitarist John McLaughlin, Indian violin player L. Shankar, percussionists Zakir Hussain (on tabla), and T. H. "Vikku" Vinayakram (on Ghatam). The band formed in 1973 following the breakup of the original Mahavishnu Orchestra and did a lot of touring between 1975 and 1977—the band's acoustic fusion sound combined elements of Indian classical music and jazz.
The English translation of the band's name, "Shakti," is "creative intelligence, beauty, and power." Since Hussain is from the north part of India, whereas the other Indian members are from the south region, Shakti also represented the merger of the Hindustani and Carnatic music traditions.
In 1997, McLaughlin and Hussain established another band with the same concept, "Remember Shakti." It featured V. Selvaganesh (son of T. H. "Vikku" Vinayakram), mandolin player U. Shrinivas, and Shankar Mahadevan.
The band reunited in 2020, and on June 23, 2023, they dropped "This Moment," their first album under the Shakti identity in 46 years. The album will be promoted with a worldwide tour called Shakti50 that will stop in India, Europe, and the United States.
