Seussical The Musical Information
The musical comedy Seussical was created by Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty and is based on a variety of Dr. Seuss children's tales. The main themes of the plot are Horton Hears a Who!, Gertrude McFuzz, and Horton Hatches the Egg, but it also incorporates many additional tales. Seuss and musical are combined to form the name of the musical. The production was critically lambasted by reviewers after its Broadway debut in 2000 and closed in 2001 at a significant financial loss.
It has inspired two US national tours and a West End production and has established itself as a staple in local theaters and schools. On November 30, 2000, Seussical made its Broadway debut at the Richard Rodgers Theatre. Frank Galati directed it, while Kathleen Marshall created the choreography. When the production returned to Broadway from Boston, Marshall's brother Rob Marshall was appointed as the show's uncredited director.
In the beginning, Catherine Zuber was in charge of creating costumes that were as accurate to Dr. Seuss's pictures as they could be, and her creations could be seen during the Boston performance. The more realistic clothing of William Ivey Long, who took Zuber's place for Broadway, clashed with the Seuss-inspired set design with David Shiner portraying The Cat in the Hat. In contrast, Horton was portrayed by Kevin Chamberlin, Mayzie LaBird by Michele Pawk, Mr. and Mrs. Mayor by Stuart Zagnit and Alice Playten, and the Sour Kangaroo by Sharon Wilkins.
