Sarah Borges is a Boston, Massachusetts-based rock and roll performer previously signed to Sugar Hill Records. "Walking that narrow line between punk and country," her music has been defined. Borges' diverse influences are frequently mentioned. Borges was born into a Portuguese family and grew up in Taunton, Massachusetts, south of Boston. She was always interested in musical theater as a child and majored in it while at Emerson College. Borges was married to Lyle Brewer, a Boston-area guitarist.
Borges' band has been known as The Broken Singles for a long time, with the only other continuous member being Binky, her longtime friend, and bassist. Various lead guitarists and drummers have performed with the band over the years. Borges signed a record deal with Houston's Blue Corn Records after performing at the South by Southwest Festival in 2004. Silver City, her debut album from 2005, was praised for demonstrating "an uncommon flair for combining alternative rock with country." Borges was compared to Maria McKee of Lone Justice by Allmusic, who praised her.
Sugar Hill Records signed them after extensive national touring and opening for notable performers like Dave Alvin, Sarah Borges, and The Broken Singles. Diamonds in the Dark, her 2007 album, is named after a phrase from the song Come Back to Me by X, one of her favorite bands. This song is covered on the CD and many other original works and covers by Tom Waits and Greg Cartwright. The album was praised by Allmusic as "grittily superb," with "brilliantly rollicking" tracks.
