Jack Hody Johnson (May 18, 1975) is an American filmmaker, singer, songwrier, and former professional surfer. He was born in North Shore, Oahu. It was at the age of 5 that he first tried to ride the waves. At the age of 17, he made history by competing in the finals of the Pipeline Masters, a premier surfing competition held annually on the North Shore of Oahu. Johnson began playing the guitar at age 8 and writing songs when he was 12, but it wasn't until he joined the college band Soil that he truly found his musical calling.
Jack Johnson's breakthrough came when he wrote and sang on "Rodeo Clowns," a track from G. Love's album Philadelphonic (1999). Johnson is not just a successful musician but also a skilled filmmaker. Johnson has featured in and directed the surf movies Thicker Than Water (2000) and The September Sessions (2002). Johnson also composed the scores for both films. A Brokedown Melody, a surf movie from 2004, also had Johnson in a starring role.
Johnson's eighth studio album, Meet the Moonlight, was released on June 24, 2022. It was his first full-length album in five years. It was recorded in Los Angeles and produced by Blake Mills and engineered by Joseph Lorge. Single "One Step Ahead" is the first track of the album.
