Santiego Jimenez Jr. (April 8, 1944) is an American folk musician. For his contributions to traditional Tex-Mex and folk music, he was awarded the National Heritage Fellowship in 2000 and the National Medal of Arts in 2016. He is up for three Grammys this year.
The plucked bass (tololoche) was first used by his father, Santiago "Flaco" Jiménez Sr., a forerunner of conjunto music. According to many, his older sibling Leonardo "Flaco" Jiménez is the best Tejano accordionist of all time. At 17, Santiago and his sibling Flaco released their debut recording. Like his father before him, Santiago has kept to the tried-and-true formula of accordion, guitar, and vocals, in contrast to the genre-bending Flaco.
Santiago has released over 700 singles across a wide variety of record companies. He also established Chief Records, his own record company. Santiago is a seasoned festival performer who has graced stages in three countries. For the first time since 1982, Santiago and Flaco shared the platform at the Tejano Conjunto Festival in San Antonio in 2012. On September 22, 2016, President Obama presented Santiago with the 2015 National Medal of Arts for his contributions to American music.
